As always the Pearl Theater is also putting on some great live shows in the forms of both music and performance. A young street performer sings his heart out to a string of oblivious passers by and only one young fellow musician stops to interact. What follows is a wonderfully fresh musical romance that follows two extraordinarily talented independent artists as their relationship blossoms through a shared passion.

Having accepted the Oscar for and performed their single "Falling Slowly" at the recent Academy Awards, these two performers turned actors brought a heartfelt sincerity to their acceptance for a film which received a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has people of all ages watching over and over again.

Whether you are a fan of music, of romance, or film, this one is certain to entertain. Come on out and enjoy the show at 7pm.

Tuesday, Feb. 26th: Double Bill Forsyth

On Tuesday, Fenruary 26th we're proud to bring you another double-"Bill" of films by Scottish director Bill Forsyth. "Gregory's Girl", the coming of age comedy story of Gregory follows the character as he and his friends discover girls at his new high school. The film won 'Best Screenplay' in that year's BAFTA Awards.

The follow-up film "Local Hero" also received critical acclaim and is considered among the top 100 80's movies of all time. It tells the story of "Mac" MacIntyre who goes to small town Scotland to make way for an oil refinery and meets up with a fantastic ensemble characters along the way. It stars Peter Riegert, Denis Lawson and Burt Lancaster.

The show starts at 7pm. See both movies for $7.50 or one movie for $5.00! There will be a brief intermission in between. Hope to see you there!

Tuesday, February, 12th: 2 Days in Paris

Just in time for Valentines Day, the Pearl Movie Series is back with a romantic comedy directed by none other than Julie Delpy, whom some of you may remember as the star of our last Valentines features "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset". "O" Magazine called it a "Must See" and E! Online called it "The Best movie of the year!". So do we!

Tuesday, December 11th - La Vie en Rose

Writer/director Olivier Dahan (Crimson Rivers II) helmed La Vie en Rose, the screen biopic of tragic French songstress Edith Piaf, the superstar once raised as a young girl by her grandmother in a Normandy bordello, then discovered on a French street corner by cabaret proprietor Louis Leplée (Gérard Depardieu).

The film segues breezily between various noteworthy episodes from Piaf's life both amazing and tragic. Through it all, the movie explores her ability to funnel personal tragedy and emotional struggles into her vocalizations -- dazzling audiences in the process.

THE GIRL IN THE CAFE is a thought-provoking drama from award-winning British director David Yates. Yates slices his narrative into two parts; the first involves a courtship between primary characters Lawrence (Bill Nighy) and Gina (Kelly MacDonald). Meeting by chance in a cafe, the two share a common bond, although Lawrence's natural reticence makes it hard for Gina to read him. The second half of the film sees the couple travelling to Reykjavik in Iceland, where high-ranking politician Lawrence is due to work at the G8 summit. But Gina has a few surprises in store for both Lawrence and the gathering of politicians, leading to an eye-opening second half of the movie. Beautifully shot, THE GIRL IN THE CAFE is a politically-charged romance movie with remarkable performances from Nighy and MacDonald.

Tuesday, Oct 30th: Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Called "The New Rocky Horror Picture Show", Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a hilarious comedy following Hedwig, born a boy named Hansel in East Berlin, who falls in love with an American G.I. and undergoes a sex-change operation in order to marry him and flee to the West.

Unfortunately, nothing worked out quite as it was supposed to - years later, Hedwig is leading her rock band on a tour of the U.S., telling her life story through a series of concerts at Bilgewater Inn seafood restaurants.

Her tour dates coincide with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis, a wide-eyed boy who once loved Hedwig... but then left with all her songs.

We're back, folks!

On Tuesday, October 16th, Pearl Movie Nights opens the 2007/2008 season with a showing of Canadian Sarah Polly's critically acclaimed directorial debut of "Away From Her".

Fiona and Grant are an elderly couple who have been married for over 40 years. Now, in the twilight of their years, they are forced to acknowledge the slow onset of Fiona's Alzheimer's Disease. After Fiona wanders away, and is subsequently found, the two make one of the hardest decisions of their lives. For the first time since their love began, they are forced apart as Fiona gets used to her new surroundings. The separation has unsuspected consequences on both of their lives as they realize what sacrifice true love sometimes means.

The show starts at 7pm, tickets are $5.

Hey Everyone!

Thanks for all the queries that have been coming in recently regarding the return of the Pearl Movie Series in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. We've received all sorts of positive feedback, encouragement and requests for information on when we'll be back.

The series will return on Tuesday, October 16th, 2007. As of yet we have no confirmed the movie which will be shown but check back here and we'll be posting it shortly as soon as it's confirmed. We look forward to seeing you out for another season!

On Saturday evening, June 9th, as part of Lunenburg's 254th birthday celebrations, The Pearl is presenting an encore screening of AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, the sensational Al Gore film. The show is at 7 pm and admission is $5.

Described as an 'entertaining horror movie', An Inconveniant Truth presents the reality behind the fear of global warming in a clear and proven scientific light. Davis Guggenheim's documentary is based largley on Al Gore's multimedia presentation on global warming which he's given hundreds of times over the last few years. This is an important movie and shouldn't be missed.

On Tuesday, April 24th we present the Oscar award winning film, The Last King of Scotland.

In the early 1970s, Nicholas Garrigan, a young semi-idealistic Scottish doctor, comes to Uganda to assist in a rural hospital. Once there, he soon meets up with the new President, Idi Amin, who promise a golden age for the African nation. Garrigan hits it off immediately with the rabid Scotland fan, who soon offers him a senior position in the national health department and becomes one of Amin's closest advisers. As the years pass, however, Garrigan cannot help but notice Amin's increasingly erratic behavior that grows beyond a legitimate fear of assassination into a murderous insanity that is driving Uganda into bloody ruin.

Think your family is dysfunctional?

Olive is a little girl with a dream: winning the Little Miss Sunshine contest. Her family wants her dream to come true, but they are so burdened with their own quirks, neuroses, and problems that they can barely make it through a day without some disaster befalling them.

Olive's father Richard is a flop as a motivational speaker, and is barely on speaking terms with her mother. Her uncle Frank, a renowned Proust scholar, has attempted suicide following an unsuccessful romance with a male graduate student. Her brother Dwayne, a fanatical follower of Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence, which allows him to escape somewhat from the family whose very presence torments him. And Olive's grandfather is a ne'er-do-well with a drug habit, but at least he enthusiastically coaches Olive in her contest talent routine. Circumstances conspire to put the entire family on the road together with the goal of getting Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine contest in far off California.

We're back again and this time around we're bringing you another great cinematic experience at the Pearl Theatre.

The film, SEABOUND is built upon an Icelandic legend but takes place in contemporary times. Surrounded by sea and mountains, a little village is preparing for a wedding as a young sailor is marrying his beloved.

At the wedding night while the whole village celebrates, his beautiful bride disappears and the only finding is her dress lying in the seayard. The young sailor seeks for explanations and is soon involved in a series of events which he never could expect and surely can’t control. When he discovers where his bride is living, he reaches for her and starts a magic journey that affects his life forever. The story’s time period is a magic seven years, and one of the key roles is played by the powerful forces of nature which affect everyone’s life.

(Note: this is not to be confused with the film The Sea.)

Radio like you've never seen it before!

Tuesday, October 24th, we present Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion. This musical comedy / drama is jam packed with star power and received grand critical acclaim.

The movie is a celebrity version of Garrison Keillor's radio show. It adds a slight story of the radio show ending as a new owner (Tommy Lee Jones) has bought the Fitzgerald theater that the show broadcasts from and is going to tear it down. Another fantasy element is thrown in as an angel (Virginia Madsen) stalks the theater to take one of the performers. Keillor plays the lead character, coincidentally called GK. Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep play the singing Johnson Sisters, with Lindsay Lohan as a suicide-obsessed daughter of Streep. Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are hilarious as the slightly off-color singing cowboy duo, Dusty & Lefty. Kevin Kline is a security guard who tells the story. Maya Rudolph also appears as a pregnant stage coordinator.

After a long hiatus, the Pearl Movie Series is finally back on the air. We hope you'll come back into the cinematic fold of our small town series and enjoy this season's selection of wonderful, challenging and stimulating cinema.

We begin this season with the award-winning film, Tsotsi.

TSOTSI is a gritty and moving portrait of an angry young man living in a state of extreme urban deprivation. His world pumps with the raw energy of "Kwaito music" - the modern beat of the ghetto that reflects his troubled state of mind.

The film is a psychological thriller in which the protagonist is compelled to confront his own brutal nature and face the consequences of his actions. It puts a human face on both the victims and the perpetrators of violent crime and is ultimately a story of hope and a triumph of love over rage.

"Tsotsi" literally means "thug" or "gangster" in the street language of South Africa's townships and ghettos. "Kwaito" is South Africa's answer to American Hip Hop.

Tuesday, Feb. 14th: Before Sunrise & Before Sunset

This Valentines Day we are happy to host a romantic double-bill of two acclaimed contemporary romance films. Written and directed by Richard Linklater, 1995's Before Sunrise, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpie brought the two characters together in a chance romance while travelling in Vienna.

In 2004's Before Sunset, the two are given a chance to revisit those romantic possibilities.

Both films are rich with witty dialog, heart-warming sincerity, and have won multiple film festival awards. Before Sunset was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published.

We'll be taking a short break between films for refreshments. We hope you'll come out and join us! The show starts at 7pm.

The Constant Gardener: Tuesday, January 24th

Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles, whose previous film, CITY OF GOD, won awards all over the world--and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2004 Oscars--has crafted another highly entertaining yet important film.

Beautifully shot in Kenya, Germany, Sudan, Manitoba, and London, The Constant Gardener, based on a bestselling novel by John Le Carré, is an exciting mix of romance and spy thriller. Ralph Fiennes stars as Justin Quayle, a low-level British diplomat who has always gone about his work very quietly, not causing any problems. But after his radical wife, Tessa (Rachel Weisz), is killed, he becomes determined to find out why, thrusting himself into the middle of a very dangerous conspiracy.

Jeffrey Caine's powerful screenplay alternates between flashbacks of Justin and Tessa's relationship and Justin's hunt for the truth, which makes him a target--although he doesn't know who is after him. Fine support is offered by Danny Huston as his close friend and confidant, Sandy; Bill Nighy as shady British official Sir Bernard Pellegrin; and Hubert Koundé as Arnold Bluhm, an African doctor who might have been a little too friendly with Tessa. Meirelles's pacing is outstanding, switching effortlessly between political intrigue, action adventure, and love story. And Fiennes and Weisz give strong performances playing complex characters that will continually surprise the audience. THE CONSTANT GARDENER is a thrilling tale from start to finish.

Critics adore the film which scored 82% at Rotten Tomatoes and we hope that you will too.

That's a wrap for the Holidays!

Thanks so much for your patronage over this past year as we began the second season of Pearl Movie Nights. With numbers growing and some very successful showings, we've closed our doors as the South Shore Players gear up for what promises to be a great live performance of "A Christmas Carol".

We'll be back in the new year with more great movies so please be sure and check back here for news of our up and coming features. All of us on the programming comittee are working to compile a list of ideas we look forward to showing you in 2006! If you have any ideas of your own, please forward them along!

An intoxicating new film from the director of Last Resort.

A long, hot English summer creeps up on the emotions of two 16-year-old girls, who live in the same Yorkshire village but are really a world apart. Mona has had a tough time growing up, but has a wit and intelligence which combine to make her yearn for something beyond the daily grind. Tamsin is rich and spoilt and seems to offer an open door to a life of exotic fascination. This new friendship becomes all consuming and they plan to run away, but as the summer draws to a close it becomes clear that their passion will take a different and darker path.

Halloween with Nosferatu Then and Now

It’s almost Hallowe'en and to mark the occasion, Pearl Movie Nights is screening a double bill of spine-tingling movies on Tuesday, October 25 at 7pm. Please feel free to attend one or both screenings (admission $8 for both, $5 for one, at the door).

Up first will be the original vampire film NOSFERATU, F.W. Murnau’s haunting 1922 Dracula adaptation. Probably the most famous European film of the silent era, it was the very first (and some argue the best) version of Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire tale and has been described as “easily the most copied film in the history of cinema”.

Following on its heels at approximately 8:10pm will be the suspense thriller SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE (2000, Rated 14), a film which imagines the horrors behind the filming of Nosferatu. It transpires that the reason Nosferatu was so sinister was because the lead actor was a REAL vampire who wreaked havoc backstage! The film features John Malkovich as the director Murnau, and Willem Dafoe as Nosferatu’s infamous vampire star, Max Schreck – a performance which earned Dafoe an Academy Award nomination.

The Sea Inside - Tuesday, Oct. 11th

Former ship's mechanic Ramón Sampedro (Javier Bardem) has been paralyzed in bed for 30 years, tenderly cared for on a farm by four members of his family. Since his injury, Ramón has been known for his upbeat attitude and his warm smile; still, his sole wish has been to bring his life to a dignified end.

But the confines of Ramón's world are opened up by the arrival of two women: . Julia (Belén Reuda), a lawyer who supports his cause, and Rosa (Lola Dueñas), a local woman who wants to convince him that life is worth living. Through the gift of his love, these two women are inspired to accomplish things they never previously thought possible.

Touching the Void

On Tuesday, September 27th, at 7:00pm, Pearl Movie Nights brings you the gripping documentary film, Touching the Void.

Two twenty-something mountain climbers descending one of the world's highest peaks face the ultimate tragedy in this stunning true story from Oscar®-winning director Kevin MacDonald.
Joe Simpson and Simon Yates set out to climb the west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. It was 1985 and the men were young, fit, skilled climbers. The west face, remote and treacherous, had not been climbed before. Following a successful 3-day ascent, disaster struck. Simpson fell a short distance and broke several bones in his leg. With no hope of rescue, the men decided to attempt descent together with Yates lowering Simpson 300 feet at a time in a slow, painful process that could have potentially been deadly for both. One further misstep led to Yates unknowingly lowering his injured partner over the lip of a crevasse. With the gradient having gone from steep to vertical, he was no longer able to hold on. Certain they were about to be pulled jointly to their deaths -- the only choice was to cut the rope. Thanks to all of you who came out for Crash in spite of the fact that we were unable to show It's All Gone Pete Tong as we'd hoped. I think a large majority of those who came out really enjoyed this thought-provoking and entertaining film and we even received some requests to show it again. Although it is currently available at your local video store, it's always a pleasure to view something with such great cinematography on the big screen.

Rest assured, Pete Tong will be coming soon!

Hello cinemaphiles!

Welcome to the new homepage of Lunenburg's Pearl Movie Nights. After a long but very worthwhile hiatus due to the renovation at HB Studios, the movie theatre is back and better than ever. The screen has been hung, the projector is now completely mounted and rewired, the seats repaired, and the inside has been completely redesigned to improve acoustics as well as to accommodate the expansion of the HB Studios offices.

Our volunteers are getting together a program of fantastic films for the new season and we hope you'll come out and enjoy a fun and inexpensive night at the movies in Lunenburg!
